I use this size kenzan to create a large arrangement in a large vase. It is very useful for securing thick, heavy branches. A black kenzan is best for a dark-colored vase. 

Kenzan is a flower frog, and it is a must-have tool for Ikebana. It is composed of a heavy lead plate covered in sharp pins. Its pins pierce through the bases of the stems to hold them in the desired position.

The most common shape is round. A bigger kenzan is better for a larger arrangement, to hold more and heavier floral materials. A smaller kenzan is better for a compact vase.
